This image was lost some time after publication.
I've honestly never heard of this thing before. A little research reveals that they came with I4 engines, so this might be a 3800 swap considering it says "new engine" and "buick v6", in which case this tiny little thing probably hauls some serious ass.

Welp, we know the roof leaks.

Here's something to mess with your head: the TR8 was a TR7 with a Rover V8... the same Buick/Rover 215 that was the aluminum ancestor to the iron 3800 V6. They changed the bellhousing pattern, otherwise I'd have suspected he got TR8 parts to do the swap with. Regardless, there are probably things that make this swap very easy.

A search for "Triumph TR7 Buick V6" shows that it's pretty common to shoehorn older Buick V6 engines into these things, sometimes with turbos (!!)

"Lost interest" - you aren't kidding. Not even interested enough to show the "New engine" or take the tarp off? (yeah, we get it, the roof leaks). Offer him $400.

Honestly for $400 I'd do it. That would be NP all day. $1200 is a bit too far this side of crack pipe.

I would go over and take a look, if the rust has not eaten it up, I would offer 800bux for it, add 100 or so to tow home and get dissecting. I would start addressing any rust issues, look over the chassis and suspension and replace all bushings. Then turn attention to braking and once there turn over the attention to engine and trans, most likely this is a carbed 3800 of some sort. Good engine, unkillable. Tune and drive, if you count your pennies, you should be in the realm of 2k for a nice runner. Why not.

Wrong Buick engine.
Rover/Buick V8 or go home :)
This one's worth the wait:
